Acupuncture And Children’s Night Time Cough Relief: Do Needles Help?

May 14th, 2008 Yama Posted in Medicines and Remedies | No Comments »

Acupuncture and children’s nighttime cough are not often heard in the same conversation. Americans are just beginning to realize the benefits of treating children’s health with acupuncture. Typically children are afraid of needles.

Recent studies show children can overcome the fear of needles. They can gain benefits for the treatment of certain conditions from the application of acupuncture. Acupuncture is an old procedure that was commonly used over 3,000 years ago in China. This treatment is low cost and effective by working together with the natural healing ability of the body.

There are different types of acupuncture, not just needles. Massage of the meridian points is one form as well as Shonishin, which is the Japanese technique of using tools like delicate rollers, hammers and scrapers. Cupping is when glass or plastic cups create a vacuum on the skin to detoxify and relieve the area. Another technique is the Gua sha where scraping with a lid and organic balm to also detoxify the area. These last two are normally done on the back and are effective for upper respiratory problems.

If acupuncture is the type done with needles, the needles used are always disposable and make of stainless steel of a small gauge. Many chronic conditions including allergies, asthma headaches and bronchitis have responded favorably to acupuncture. To do acupuncture at body’s Qi (Chi) point, it help to restore emotional, spiritual and physical balance. It is not causing the pain and needle insertion can make the different sensations like excitement or feeling like pressure, the feeling can be comfortable and relaxing. Another interesting point is the point on top of the foot. It located between the first and second toes is the liver meridian point. If there is the acupuncture treatment at this point it will help balances out emotions and can reduce headaches and stress.

There is other trend that is using acupuncture to cure the deafness. It is increasingly at the present time because there are some success results but commonly it is still being debated. Acupuncture can help a person’s ability to be better observing the different between sounds or speeches. It allows person to have more clearness with the use of a hearing aid. Hearing aids does not make more distinguished but it makes sounds louder. To cure deafness, the Liver and Kidney points are the point of acupuncture treatment.

The acupuncturist first looks for external causes. Eastern medicine focuses on external or emotional factors such as wind, cold, dry, heat, summer heat and dampness factors or emotional causes such as stress from school or peers and family life. In one recent study, when using acupuncture to treat children’s night time cough and other chronic conditions, 70% of patients felt significantly less pain.

Although Traditional Oriental Medicine seems to be a fairly new practice in the United States, it’s been a major form of health care for over a quarter of the world for many years. For a serious alternative to pain, combining acupuncture and children’s nighttime cough can be a healthy match.

Ideal Age To Take Your Dog To Obedience Classes

May 14th, 2008 AmyNutt Posted in Pets | No Comments »

Dog owners will want to be proud of the dogs they own. Not only will they want to feed the best food to their dogs and give them the best health care, dog owners will also want their dogs to be obedient. And to instill this obedience in dogs, it is necessary to give them some obedience training through obedience classes.

The importance of obedience training

Obedience is a must for all dogs. With obedience training, you can expect to find a solution to the discipline problems that you encounter with your dog. In order to avoid domestic problems, which are common when a dog is introduced to a new household, you have to send your dog to training classes to ensure that your home is safe for your family members, especially your children and other pets.

In addition to providing a safe environment, obedience training also establishes a line of communication between the dog and you. And it is with this communication that it is possible for you to instruct the dog to do what you want it to do. Once the dog learns to communicate with you, you will be able to teach it to obey your commands.

There is no age requirement to enroll your dog for obedience classes. A puppy can learn to do tricks and follow commands when it is as young as 8 weeks of age. It is better to take the dog to obedience classes at around 4 months old, right after it has completed all its vaccinations. Usually, basic training courses accept puppies between 3-6 months of age.

Basically, it is easier to train dogs that have a basic understanding of basic commands like “sit” or “stay”. Training an older dog can be more challenging because it has already developed some habits that may be undesirable to you.

It is not the dog but the owner that the dog trainer trains

Many kennels, pet stores and independent trainers conduct training courses for dogs. When you take your dog to an obedience class, you may be surprised that it is not the dog that the professional dog trainer trains. Instead, you are the one who will be taught how to train the dog.

However, you can also send your dog away to a training school to be taught obedience, but you will have to know what the dog has been taught, and how to use and reinforce the techniques that have been taught to the dog. With owners and dogs attending classes together, they learn more about each other, and how to work together under the supervision of the trainer.

It is easier to train a dog if you are aware of the commands and methods that are taught to the dog. Moreover, by attending obedience classes, you and your dog can meet other dogs and people, and learn more things from them.

Obedience training requires consistency, patience and understanding

Your dog will respond better if you are consistent in the way you handle it. With clear cut instructions, the dog learns everything it has to do, where it has to do it and what not to do. Understanding your dog’s needs is a difficult part of obedience training for you. However, as you spend more time with your dog, you will know how to read its movements and expressions, and find the right way to teach it.

Although dogs are expressive by nature, they cannot tolerate discernible messages from inexperienced owners. It is through biting, whining and being fidgety that puppies learn to communicate with you. And it is with the right response you give the dog that you will have an obedient and healthy puppy that will grow up to be a great companion for many years to come.

Pharmacopoeia The Complete Medical Guide

May 14th, 2008 DanielMillions Posted in Medicines and Remedies | No Comments »

With the ever increasing number of medicinal compounds, chemicals and drugs it is necessary to have a centralized source of information by which any researcher or doctor can investigate the treatments he may wish to make for a patient. Unlike a manual that only lists the types of pills or tablets available, the Pharmacopoeia attempts to be the comprehensive collection of all things used to treat disease and illness.

In modern times this pharmacopoeia will be regulated and published by a government-regulating agency. In this “book of books” will be listings to aid in the identification of substances and the means of preparation by which the compounds can be prepared and used.

Before the sixteenth century most physicians and pharmacists used the old notes and treatises put out by apothecaries. There was no central authority or standardized method of testing to see if the treatments listed were in fact even effective. There was always the problem of myth and superstition being inserted in place of proven medical research.

With most medicines at the time having herbal origins, there was increased the danger of variations in soil, growing conditions, preservation and preparation. Under this non-system of hit and miss medical information, even useful and effective compounds could be misused or improperly administered, leading to worse results than if the disease had been left to run its course.

For the next hundred and fifty years, European pharmacopoeia began the slow process of researching and compiling more complete lists of drugs and preparations with the aim of eliminating some of the more bizarre and questionable practices. By the mid eighteenth century the London Pharmacopoeia had evolved to contain just the drugs and treatments that were held by the majority of physicians as effective.

Many of the medical formulas were simplified and the lists of extraneous ingredients that had no real import on the effectiveness of medicines was added as items to be avoided. While some old medical practices were removed, there were other drugs, formerly considered too dangerous or unstable, added or reintroduced.

By the late nineteenth century the pharmacopoeia took its last major step to improving the overall effectiveness of medical knowledge. Previously the compilers of these volumes did not in fact practice pharmacology and it was felt that while they were able to decide what was required but lacked knowledge of how to do the actual manufacturing process of the compounds. It was here that the work was divided into separate parts, one discussing the uses and effects of the medical compounds and the other dealing only with the construction of the drugs.

Trade synonyms for certain compounds cause problems that need to be overcome. The inclusion of substances that have uses other than just medical applications have lead to confusion as to what level of purity or production method will yield a medically acceptable form of a compound. Some of these compounds, in a slightly different form, might be used for some purpose like cleaning a floor and could be deadly if included in the preparation of a medicine.

In the modern age new developments in medicines and treatments are being brought out too quickly for the pharmacopoeia to ever be completely up-to-date. As it may sometimes take several years to get a new treatment listed in the book of books, it is necessary to have frequent supplemental updates issued to cover the latest developments in medical knowledge.

Interested In The Apple Cider Vinegar Acid Reflux Home Remedy?

May 14th, 2008 KathrynWhittaker Posted in Medicines and Remedies | No Comments »

Although you may need to take medications to help ease nighttime heartburn, did you know that there is a natural apple cider vinegar acid reflux remedy you can try to ease symptoms during the day? Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a natural treatment that has been used to treat a variety of ailments for many years, and is a popular choice among acid reflux sufferers.

ACV is vinegar made from crushed and aged apples known as cider or apple must. When unfiltered, ACV has a brownish-yellow color. Unfiltered cider vinegar, also known as organic apple cider vinegar, contains what is known as the “mother of vinegar” or simply the “mother”. The mother looks like stringy floating globs in the liquid, and is where all of the healing properties of ACV reside.

ACV contains minerals, as well as trace elements including magnesium, chlorine phosphorous, sulfur, sodium, calcium, potassium, iron, copper, fluorine and silicon. Due of all of its beneficial ingredients, ACV is a natural fighter of bacteria, which often makes it a beneficial vinegar acid reflux treatment choice.

How can apple cider vinegar benefit acid reflux sufferers? You may be confused as to how a type of vinegar could be beneficial for treating acid reflux symptoms such as heartburn. After all, doesn’t vinegar have a high acid content? Wouldn’t cider vinegar just exacerbate the problem? Surprisingly, for most acid reflux sufferers, ACV helps to relieve the burning sensation and nausea caused by reflux without adding to it.

Why? The reason is because many people with digestive problems like acid reflux, experience problems not because they have too much acid, but because they have too little. Apple cider vinegar mimics the acid level of the stomach, which aids in the proper digestion of food, and can help aid the stomach in digesting.

Therefore, in some cases, vinegar acid reflux remedies for heartburn work more effectively than antacids, because although antacids will cure heartburn, they are designed to diminish acid within the system. Thus, antacids will not treat the actual cause if acid reflux is the result of too little stomach acid, and instead can make reflux more frequent.

How should you take apple cider vinegar? Apple cider vinegar is available in many forms including liquid, tablet and capsule. However, when using ACV as a natural treatment, the only form you should obtain is the organic liquid that contains the “mother” enzyme.

When taking ACV, you will first want to shake it well before you ingest it to disperse the mother throughout the liquid. To start, try taking one tablespoon of cider vinegar before each meal. You will likely find the taste of the ACV to be quite potent. It is an acquired taste, and you should grow more accustomed to the flavor after the first few vinegar acid reflux treatments.

Nevertheless, should you find it too repellant, there are a few other ways you can take ACV such as:

- Mix a tablespoon in a fat free salad dressing or light mayonnaise and eat it with your meal

- Sprinkle a tablespoon on salad or vegetables

- Mix a tablespoon in an 8 oz. glass of water and add a bit of honey to sweeten the drink.

- Make a tea out of ACV by adding a tablespoon of the cider vinegar to hot water and slowly sipping it.

Although it is best to ingest apple cider vinegar prior to each meal, you can also take a tablespoon when your stomach is upset or heartburn acts up.

After taking apple cider vinegar for a few days, many acid reflux sufferers find that their symptoms improve, and continue to improve with treatment in the months that follow. However, in addition, you should be aware that ACV has a few mild side effects including stomach upset. Furthermore, ACV may worsen heartburn in some individuals. It is also known to thin the blood and should be avoided by anyone taking blood thinning medications such as anti-coagulants.

Always remember that you should speak to your doctor first before starting any treatment, including vinegar acid reflux treatment, and keep in mind that natural treatment should not replace any medication or treatment advice that has been prescribed by your doctor without prior consultation.

Types Of Contact Lenses

May 14th, 2008 AmyNutt Posted in Medicines and Remedies | No Comments »

The development of the contact lens has changed how those with bad vision see the world. At one time hard lenses were the only contact lenses that anyone had access to, but later came the disposable soft lens that required less care and could be thrown away after a certain time period of wear. Now there are many different options available to contact lens wearers based on their requests and the recommendations of their doctors. This allows more people to wear contact lenses than ever before. Many of those who could not wear contacts years ago, because the kind that was being used was not for them, can now wear them with ease.

With their being so many kinds available, the type of contact that is prescribed is dependent upon a person’s particular situation. Here are the different types of contact lenses that are available:

1. PMMA lenses, which are also called hard contact lenses are the oldest that are around. Believe it or not they have been around since the 1960s. They are made from polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). These contacts are very durable, but their disadvantage is the fact that they do not allow oxygen to reach the cornea directly. The oxygen is received in the cornea when the wearer blinks and oxygen-rich tears reach the cornea due to the movement of the lens. They are of low cost, but they are hardly used anymore. However, there are some patients who prefer them.

2. Soft contact lenses are the lenses that are used most often. They are made of plastic and other materials such as silicone. Water is also used in their construction, which makes them soft. They also allow the oxygen to directly reach the cornea. Soft contact lenses are used by 3/4 of the contact wearers in the United States. There are also different types of soft contacts such as:

- Daily disposable lenses that must be thrown away at the end of each day. These are more expensive, but the risk of developing an eye infection is minimal.

- Toric lenses for astigmatism. These contacts are for those who do not have any other eye issue other than astigmatism that must be corrected.

- Extended wear lenses typically last 2-4 weeks. The usage of the 30 day contact started approximately 6 years ago. The risk of infection is higher and they do tend to be somewhat expensive, but the wearer is able to wear the contacts day and night for 30 days without having to take them out.

3. The last type of contact lens is the gas-permeable lens. These are the newer version of the hard lens that are made of silicone and other materials that allows the oxygen to directly reach the cornea. This is why they are called gas permeable.

There are so many advantages to using contact lenses for those who are able to wear one of the above that were described. Of course there are risks such as the hard contact lenses being more likely to scratch the cornea and extended wear contacts causing infection, especially if they are not maintained properly. No matter the type of contact lens a person is wearing, it is important to take care of them they way they are supposed to in order to minimize the risk of infection in the eye. Those who develop frequent eye infections may not be allowed to wear them by their doctor. Even those with severe allergies may be forbidden, but contacts open up a whole new world for those who can wear them because they can see things differently.

Clearly Contacts is an online contact lens company offering a wide selection of contact lenses to meet your individual needs. Makes such as Acuvue, Focus, Freshlook, Proclear and PureVision.

The Advantages Of Having A Skin Resurfacing Are Many And Valuable

May 14th, 2008 AmyNutt Posted in Medicines and Remedies | No Comments »

What can Skin Resurfacing do for Me?

You may be wondering what are the advantages of having a skin resurfacing. Maybe your mind wanders to the idea of having your face sandblasted with a power tool and that conjures up frightful images. Skin resurfacing thankfully is a beneficial beautification procedure that doesn’t involve power tools. Techniques are used to give your skin a dewier, more youthful attractiveness. Skin resurfacing can be a splendid alternative to having a full face lift and going under the knife. It helps to eliminate unsightly lines and wrinkles that may seem to have popped up overnight. It also assists with the overall coloration of the skin and can rid the face of sun and age spots. The effects can last for quite some time, and not require constant treatments.

What to Expect from Skin Resurfacing

- Disappearance of fine lines and many stubborn, unmovable wrinkles

- An enhanced, soft feel to the facial skin

- Freckling, odd pigmentation, and sun spots are lessened or eliminated

- Acne scars are minimized or completely removed

- Blood vessels at the skin’s surface are less visible keeping the face from appearing red constantly

- Lower eyelid wrinkles are lessened in severity

- The skin has an invigorated, healthy glow

When Will I have to have Skin Resurfacing Redone?

Nobody can stop their skin from aging through any procedure. However, skin resurfacing is wonderful for not requiring constant maintenance. The glowing effects of skin resurfacing can last for several months causing one to appear younger with healthy-looking skin. A lot of times wrinkles and fine lines such as furrowing of the brow are caused largely by people’s facial expressions. As time marches on to its own drum, facial skin will again gain some of the wrinkles back just from living. At this point it will be necessary to have the skin resurfacing treatment applied again.

Advantages of Skin Resurfacing over Plastic Surgery

You may have though plastic surgery is the only answer to age-related changes in facial skin. That simply is not the case. Surgery no matter how minor or major it is considered to be always involves a level of risk. There’s always the chance that undergoing plastic surgery will have effects on appearance that will be negative. What if the plastic surgeon isn’t all he or she is cracked up to be, and you end up looking worse than if you never had the surgery? That damage may be irreparable.

However, skin resurfacing treats the nagging issues that come along with aging skin with almost no risk involved. It allows you to achieve the younger, healthier look your skin may have had twenty or thirty years prior. The skin itself will appear more radiant and will have a glow that plastic surgery doesn’t yield. Not to mention a surgery that involves incising of the skin does permanent damage. It only takes the harsh appearance away from eyelid wrinkles and other skin aberrations, but doesn’t eliminate it even though surgery was performed. Skin resurfacing helps to firm up areas that tend to sag and wrinkle such as eyelids.

Some of the complications involved with plastic surgery are:

- Fluid and blood collects under the skin

- A crust-like appearance to scars resulting from the surgery

- Pigmentation changes that are highly noticeable

- Infectious conditions

- Irreparable nerve damage

- A numbing sensation in the facial area

- Several weeks of experiencing bleeding, chronic pain, and swelling

This is not an exhaustive list of complications for plastic surgery, but it gives you an idea of the risks involved. It makes sense that skin resurfacing is a much better solution to the aesthetic needs of aging. Skin resurfacing allows you to achieve the results you want without the risk and harm surgery can bring.

Cure Spider Veins: Prevent Them And Heal Them

May 13th, 2008 LisaOrtega Posted in Medicines and Remedies | No Comments »

So you have spider veins or you are worried about getting them? You think they may be genetic and unavoidable but you are not sure. You may be concerned about how to prevent them, treat them, and cure them. With advancements in the venous health field, many vein doctors at vein clinics all over offer treatments that can help keep your veins healthy and your skin beautiful.

To cure spider veins is to treat them once they have already developed. With modern medicine, there are opportunities that help to eradicate veins that are visible to the eye due to pooling blood and poor circulation. These treatments do work and using sclerotherapy and laser treatments have been highly successful. But to truly cure spider veins, one must address what is causing them to occur in the first place. Undue weight and pressure on the legs for extended periods of time can cause veins to develop. This can be due to obesity, weight gain, pregnancy, certain occupations, and an overall lack of awareness related to the body. It is important to remain aware of your cardiovascular health and circulation in the body so that veins are less likely to become visible under the skin.

Having an overall healthy concern for the body is the best way to cure spider veins. When you are aware of your weight, your fitness routine, your diet, and overall taking care of your body, it is possible to help prevent spider veins in the first place. Once they have developed however, there are treatment options. Sclerotherapy involves injections into the veins causing them to undergo fibrosis. This in turn eliminates the veins. Side effects are minor and the procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis.

Laser treatment is fast becoming the most popular and in-demand cure for spider veins. It is also an outpatient procedure which involves minor recovery time and is non-invasive. No injections are needed. A minor pain relieving cream can be applied to help numb the snapping of the laser, but the procedure is generally easy and mild. Depending on the number of veins and the severity, more than one treatment may be necessary. A vein doctor can discuss your options with you and go over what can be done to help keep the veins from recurring. It is important to have realistic expectations with all medical treatments and to have a good idea of the entire process prior to beginning treatments. This helps to ensure that your chosen cure for spider veins is effective and lasting.

To help keep spider veins away, it is obviously important to remember that though there may be treatments that exist for the sake of removing the spider veins, they are not 100% effective at preventing their recurrence in new places. This requires a commitment to exercise, a healthy diet, and staying within a healthy weight range. It is vital to remember that the body will show symptoms of dis-ease if it is not appropriately taken care of. Spider veins are a manifestation of that and can be prevented if the appropriate measures are taken.

Broken Capillaries And Spider Veins In The Legs: How To Prevent And Treat Them

May 13th, 2008 LisaOrtega Posted in Medicines and Remedies | No Comments »

For many, visible veins in the legs and other areas of the body can be a source of insecurity. It can be difficult to wish to show certain areas of the body if they reveal visible veins. There are many treatment options for such veins, as well as prevention techniques that should be considered. Though veins are linked to genetic factors, there are ways to keep the cardiovascular and circulatory system in good health which helps to prevent spider veins from occurring.

Broken capillaries and spider veins in the legs are a sign of a number of different issues. Certain health issues are linked to their occurring but what is overwhelmingly associated with spider veins is lack of committed physical exercise, weight or pressure on the legs, and poor lifestyle habits when it comes to circulatory health. It is true that the body needs regular exercise to remain healthy. And usually, the healthier the heart, the less likely you are to have venous disorders or issues. Since the heart is muscle which must be fit enough to effectively pump blood throughout the body, the chances of having healthy veins with a healthy heart are increased. Exercise is one of the most obvious ways to prevent broken capillaries and spider veins in the legs. Keeping the heart strong and committing to an exercise routine is vital.

Prevention of most any and all health issues is the best medicine. Preventing yourself from getting sick in the first place is the best way to avoid the pain and recuperation. Part of this prevention involves exercise for the sake of a healthy heart and the other half of preventing broken capillaries and spider veins in the legs involves keeping weight at a healthy level. With undue pressure placed on the body, especially the lower half, circulation becomes hindered to some extent and veins are more likely to become visible. Also, sitting and standing for extended periods of time can cause blood to pool in the legs. If this is a career choice, the chances of getting broken capillaries and spider veins in the legs is reduced with an active lifestyle and stretching, movement, etc. However, it is generally not the best idea to sit or stand for extended periods of time without stretching, walking, moving, etc. Furthermore, during travel when sitting occurs for extended periods, it is good to move around, walk, stretch, and take a break. This allows to blood to circulate more freely and keeps the body healthy. It is important to remain aware of these sorts of details if you wish to remain free of unsightly veins. After all, veins are part of the body and a very important one. It is best to remain focused on keeping them healthy.

Modern medicine provides vein clinics where patients can speak with professional vein doctors about their specific health concerns and discuss treatment options. Sclerotherapy has been used for years and recent advancements in laser technology have made vein treatment easier as well. To remain committed to keep broken capillaries and spider veins in the legs out of your life, start a healthy fitness routine and visit a vein clinic in your area for answers.

Is Laser Hair Removal Suitable For You?

May 13th, 2008 TamsinGray Posted in Medicines and Remedies | No Comments »

If you are tired of having to go on an almost daily routine of shaving or tweezing to remove unwanted facial and body hair, you are not alone. Unwanted hair removal is a tedious but necessary part of personal grooming and many are looking for permanent or semi-permanent solutions such as waxing or laser hair removal.

One of the main reasons why laser hair removal is more popular than other methods of hair removal is that it is a relatively painless process with results that can last for several months. Previously, only electrolysis offered a semi permanent option for hair removal but the procedure is tedious and painful. Both methods however work on the same basis of removing hair follicles to stop hair growth.

Contrary to what many believe, laser hair removal does not give instant results with one session. Laser hair removal can be used for face, underarm and neck with several sessions required before results start to show. As much as a 50 percent reduction in hair can be achieved after 4 months with 1 treatment. A second treatment is required after about 6 months when hair starts to grow back.

Patients who have used laser hair removal reported a 70-80 percent success rate after 2 or 3 visits. Also, when hair grows back, it is usually of a finer texture and more sparse than original hair growth.

One of the earliest hair removal laser systems to be approved was the Nd:YAG. This system required that unwanted hair be removed by waxing first in order to open up follicles, allowing the laser to reach them. A light absorbing, carbon-based lotion will be applied that is heated up by the laser. The heated lotion destroys hair follicle causing them to stop hair growth.

Since then, there have been new developments in the area of laser hair removal where instead of a continuous laser beam, a pulsing light is used. This more advanced method of removing unwanted hair is less time consuming and does away with the need for waxing and application of the carbon-based lotion. The use of pulsing light allows the hair follicle to be heated up more quickly thereby exposing the skin less to potentially damaging heat.

Although laser hair removal is an effective method for removing unwanted hair, the process is fairly expensive compared to other hair removal options. This is especially so when multiple sessions are required to obtain optimal results. For some areas such as the face, removing facial hair could cost around $1,000 or more lengthy procedures such as removing hair from the back or legs can cost around $3,000 for a series of treatments.

Before you decide on parting with your hard-earned cash on laser hair removal, make sure you do a thorough research on a professional clinic with a good reputation for hair removal procedures. Do a search on the clinic and the doctor who will be carrying out the procedure and check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to see if there are any complaints filed against the clinic.
